The National Gallery of Australia strives to foster a greater understanding and knowledge of visual art and the creative process as well as increase sensitivity to cultural differences and cultural identity.

The Gallery's education programs encourage visitors to better understand the power of creativity and imagination, to improve observation skills, participate in discussions and to learn from arts professionals.

While visual art is the main focus of the Gallery, other key learning areas that can be discussed in relation to works of art include English, studies of society and environment, Aboriginal studies, Asian studies, technology, civics and citizenship, health and languages other than English.
